4 Things to do/not do when inviting someone into a Discipling Relationship - June 15, 2021 Podcast Show Notes

4 Things To Do:

  1. Pray for wisdom & God’s leading - this is what Jesus did!

  2. Look for people who are HUNGRY - metaphor of putting on “spiritual golf goggles” to see people who are in need or in transition - “in the rough”. Seeking the Lord every day for “divine appointments” with people who have a real “felt” need. Also look for “F.A.T.” people = faithful, available, teachable. Anyone who you are going to invest your time with must have these qualities otherwise you will end up wasting your time.

  3. “Just do it!” - Step out in faith and actually invite them - most likely people will not reach out and ask to be mentored or discipled.

  4. So how EXACTLY do you do it? Be obedient! With spiritual goggles on, when those divine appointments occur, be willing to WALK ACROSS THE ROOM. Initiate with someone, set up a time to talk, then be proactive to move the conversation to talking about the Lord. Ask open ended questions that will facilitate great discussion: “Tell me your story” or “Catch me up on you”.

4 Things NOT To Do:

  1. Don’t overthink it - build relationships & trust God. Don’t make it more complicated than that.

  2. Don’t wait for the “perfect moment” to ask someone to consider getting involved in discipleship.

  3. Don’t worry about the size of the potential group - it could actually start with just you and one other person.

  4. Don’t rush it either - let it develop naturally. Just follow the Lord’s lead and He will give you the perfect time.
