Session 3- How do we gather people
Recap and Teaching Notes
Session #3 Recap

Session 3 - “…that they might be with Him…”
Session ONE: Discussed the huge need - people are disconnected from God, from each other and from the great commission.
We also introduced the passage that we are focusing on this fall:
“Jesus went up on a mountainside and called to him those he wanted, and they came to him. He appointed twelve - designating them apostles - that they might be with him and that he might send them out…” Mark 3:13-14
Session TWO: “He called to him those he wanted…”
Discussed the call of Jesus. Are we called to be disciple-makers with Legacy? What does that look like? “It’s the love of Christ that compels us…” 2 Corinthians 5:14
And we began the process of making a list of people that we can each be praying for that we might call into a discipling relationship in the same way that Jesus did.
Session THREE: “That they might be with Him…” Journeying together with Jesus.
Jesus didn’t just grab a group of people and then send them out for a brief time. He called them to a purposeful journey where they would do life together. They would experience Jesus together on a daily basis. They would learn from the master and be able to see his character all the time.
Since He is no longer here in person, His Spirit uses us to be the presence of Jesus to others, He calls us to follow his example and do the same.
“We loved you so much that we were delighted to share with you not only the gospel of God but our lives as well, because you had become so dear to us.” 1 Thessalonians 2:8
Being with Jesus means experiencing His tenderness and strength. A place of welcome and challenge. THE MOST EFFECTIVE GROUPS WILL REFLECT THIS SAME COMMITMENT TO BE WELCOMING AND CHALLENGING.
Reflection:
Why do you think “that they might be with him” is a central part of discipleship?
What does it look like today for disciples to be “be together with Jesus”?
Why is togetherness important?
What happens in your lives when you skip this part of discipleship, and just feel called to go out and share without actually experiencing Jesus yourself?
Teaching Notes
What should our groups or 1x1’s look like? How are we to be “together with Jesus”?
“42 They devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and to fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer. 43 Everyone was filled with awe at the many wonders and signs performed by the apostles. 44 All the believers were together and had everything in common. 45 They sold property and possessions to give to anyone who had need. 46 Every day they continued to meet together in the temple courts. They broke bread in their homes and ate together with glad and sincere hearts, 47 praising God and enjoying the favor of all the people. And the Lord added to their number daily those who were being saved.” Acts 2:42-47
What does it mean to be devoted? We have to actually ask people to say YES. They need to be all in. Successful groups get buy-in from the beginning on what the commitment looks like. Weekly? Monthly? In person? 1 hour? 2 hours? etc….
What are the things from Acts 2:42-47 that they are being asked to devote themselves to?
1. The Apostles Teaching - The Word/ The Bible
a. God primarily speaks to us through his word
b. Through God’s word we learn about His plan for us in Jesus Christ.
(special vs general revelation)
c. Through God’s word we learn how to walk in his Goodness in life.
What are some ways that we can incorporate the Word into our small groups?
For example, an actual study from the Bible itself or a book based on the scriptures. Discuss other ideas that have worked well for people in the past. You can check out our resources here. Password is Romans116
2. Fellowship - Show and share the Love of Christ
“By the way you love another the world will know that you are my disciples.” John 13:35
a. Real Life - Listen to People’s stories, value others needs above your own.
b. Generously supporting each other.
c. Encouraging one another on God’s path.
i. Question 1: What is the Lord saying to you?
ii. Questions 2: How can we help you live into that word from God?
d. Encourage everyone to be an active member of a local church
e. Breaking Bread - eating together, being “in community”
What are some things that are helpful for building a strong fellowship?
For example, at the formation of a group, discuss confidentiality and intimacy. How do you support and encourage each other? What format is best for sharing what’s going on in people’s lives? Discuss ways that you have seen successful groups practice fellowship.
3. Prayer
a. A way to connect together with God, and experience his power.
b. A way to bring true humility
c. Do not assume most people pray on their own.
d. Share prayer requests, people will go as deep as you model
What are some things to think about in order to have a great prayer component to your group?
For example, HOW do you share prayer requests? Logistically, how do you organize prayer for these things? Discuss “best practices” having to do with “conversational” group prayer.
4. The Lord added to their number!
a. We should be seeing this kind of fruit.
b. It will not happen unless we go out.
Next month we will discuss this topic further - Jesus sends us out!
