Session 4- How do we go?

Session #4 Recap

Session 4 - “…that He might send them out…”

Jesus appoints the Twelve - Mark 3:13-15

“Jesus went up on a mountainside and called to him those he wanted, and they came to him. He appointed twelve that they might be with him and that he might send them out to preach and to have authority to drive out demons.”

Sent out to PREACH:

“…commanded them not to speak or teach at all in the name of Jesus…we cannot help speaking about what we have seen and heard…” Acts 4:18,20

We are called to spread the good news of the Gospel. The first step in disciple-making is introducing people to Jesus!

“But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.” Acts 1:8

YOU will be my witnesses…you WILL be my witnesses…you will BE my witnesses…you will be MY witnesses!!!

Sent out to HAVE AUTHORITY TO DRIVE OUT DEMONS:

“Put on the full armor of God so that you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes. For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms.” Eph 6:10-12

While we don’t think there is a demon behind every rock, we have to be very aware of the reality of the spiritual battle against the devil’s schemes and those spiritual forces of evil. We must rely on the power and authority of the Holy Spirit and the NAME OF JESUS.

“Where there are no oxen, the manger is empty (and clean), but from the strength of an ox comes an abundant harvest.” Proverbs 14:4

Would we rather have our “sheep pen” or “manger” clean but weak or messy and powerful? Discipling people will be messy at times!

Matthew 28 - The Great Commission

16 Then the eleven disciples went to Galilee, to the mountain where Jesus had told them to go. 17 When they saw him, they worshiped him; but some doubted. 18 Then Jesus came to them and said, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. 19 Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.”

 Jesus Addresses the Doubts

“They worshipped him, but some doubted…”

If they knew Jesus had risen from the dead and was resurrected in front of him, what do you think they doubted?

Do you think they doubted God or themselves?

Jesus’ Response

“All authority has been given to me…”

Why is authority important?

How would the power of Jesus address their doubts and fears?

“And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.”

How would this have addressed their fears and doubts?

What can we learn about the presence of Jesus from this passage?

THE CALL OF GOD IN THE GREAT COMMISSION

Jesus reiterates his calling in their lives, again this is not new information, they have doubts about this mission that he has given to them.

“Go…”

How might the first word of the great co-mission be the key to the whole thing?

Why do we, like the first disciples, find this word so scary?

“And make disciples of all nations”

What does it mean to make a disciple?

Who makes disciples?  What is our role and what is God’s role?

“Baptizing them in the name of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit”

Part of disciple-making is baptism.  Baptism is the sign of the new covenant, it is the way that someone would officially be brought into the family of God.  When we have followed the great commission faithfully, people who are not a part of the Christian community will be welcomed in.

Do you think people are searching for a place to belong and be welcomed?

How do we make people feel welcomed?

How might becoming part of the Christian community impact someone?

“Teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you.”

How would we do this?

What is the difference between knowing and obeying?

Where do we go from here? Homework:

  1. Listen to who God is “sending you out” to and then “just do it”.

  2. Meet with Bill or Mike to create a game plan for you going forward regarding HOW you obey whatever the Lord is telling you to do.

  3. We will continue the group chat to encourage each other and push each other to be disciples who make disciples.

  4. For those who feel called to be Legacy leaders, we will offer occasional zoom calls, in person gatherings, and future leader retreats for encouragement, practical discussions, helping each other with best practices, etc.
